Annual Blue and Gray Reunion
May 30 - June 2, 2013
Downtown Philippi

THESIS Families,
Friday May 31 is Kids' Day at the Annual Blue & Gray Reunion.  You can find driving directions on the website, and parking help below.  This is an "on your own" field trip to enjoy at your own pace with your own family.  Please stop at the Gazebo and pay $1 per school-aged child when you arrive.  Events and history stations begin at 9 am and continue through early afternoon, to be enjoyed in any sequence that you like.

Have a wonderful time!
Liz

Parking: There are no officially designated parking lots of which I’m aware, but there are several places scattered throughout the town. One lot is located at the corner of Pike St and N High St, about 2 blocks behind and past the Courthouse. Another possibility is behind Sheetz (beside the covered bridge) or before you get to Sheetz in the small lot which is adjacent to the railroad tracks/river. Hardee’s and Rite Aid have parking places much farther away from the history stations.

Experience a piece of America's history. You can relive the year 1861, when the first land battle of the Civil War was fought. Re-enactors will highlight important moments in our history. Civil War campsites will be erected for the public to enjoy. Other activities will include artillery, little soldiers' battles, amputation re-enactment, parades, crafts, a Civil War ball, 5k Run, a Quilt Show at Mountain Treasures and food everywhere.

Friday is Kids' Day. Along with the normal activities, there will be living history stations with Abe and Mrs. Lincoln, nurses, quilting, cooking, music, games, General Lee, court room proceedings, and more.

The re-enactment of the first land battle of the Civil War will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. Following the battle, a re-enactment of the historic Hanger amputation will take place in sutler row. A discussion of commonly used Civil War medical practices will also take place. There will be a medical display including a federal doctor's field kit, repro medical supplies, commonly used herbal remedies, photos, and other medical artifacts.

Visit the Blue and Gray Park, featuring the five flags that flew over Philippi, Virginia, during the first land battle of the Civil War. Walk over the Covered Bridge. Tour the Barbour County Historical Museum. Travel back 145 years, dress for the occasion, feel like it is 1861.

Schedule, schmedule...we are doing things differently this week! Please note below, so you'll be in the know:

Field trips this Wednesday:  Yes, it is Wednesday, February 20th (tomorrow) that we are going to the Fairmont State Folklife Center (older students) and the Fairmont City fire station at the end of Adams Street (younger ones).

Both field trips are scheduled for 10:00 am, and you may drop off older students at FSU, go on to the fire station with your young ones, and then come back to FSU later. Parking can be an issue at FSU, so those who are able to carpool with each other, may want to do so. It is also possible to park on the road by Selena Campbell's house (near FSU) and carpool from there. If anyone would like to do that, please let her know.

No classes will be held this Friday to allow the resident artists and writers among us to prepare for displaying their prized works at our biennial Art and Literature Fair, which will begin at 7:00.

Questions? Click here for contact info.

Thursday & Friday Reminders

Hello Everyone!

If you signed up to go on the middle school field trip for THIS THURSDAY (10/4) to Cooper's Rock, please note that we will meet at the big parking lot by the main pavilion at 11:00 am.

Mr. Bob Johnson, geologist, will do a rock walk with middle school students that day--and the weather looks like it will cooperate!

To get to Cooper's Rock, take I-68 Exit 15, and then follow the signs. The park is beautiful and fun for hiking (on clearly marked trails) and picnicking, in case you want to plan accordingly.

We are back to class schedule this Friday! You know the drill by now -- wear appropriate clothing for gym activities, bring only water to drink.

Mr. Bledsoe is a candidate for the House of Delagates, and he will be speaking to us during announcements this Friday, and also to the Group D Elections class and the Group F Leadership class. Don't forget to come up with some great questions to ask Mr. Bledsoe while he is with us.

Finally, if you signed up to bring apples or corndogs for Trinity's Harvest Fest this Saturday, October 6th, be sure to bring them in THIS Friday -- the Harvest Fest is the following evening!

Questions? Click here to contact us.

K-3 Field Trip to Shop and Save

Hello Everyone,

Those who signed up for our field trip to the Middletown Shop and Save should plan to meet in front of the store this Friday. (We will meet inside the front of the store, if it is raining.)

Our field trip begins at 10:30, so if you are late you will need to ask the front office where the field trip groups currently are. Our guides will divide us into two groups, and we will proceed through a behind-the-scenes tour where the children will get to make a mini pizza, decorate a cookie, and get to ring up something on a register.

This will be approximately 1 1/2-2 hours, so we should be done around 12:30.

If you have any questions, just call me at 304.363.0944.
